Welcome
to the Pelican Landing Amenity for Canoeing and Kayaking
The Canoe Park on Pelican's
Nest Drive is one of Pelican Landing Community Association's amenities. The
Association maintains canoes and kayaks for residents to use on Spring
Creek, a quiet meandering tributary of Estero Bay. The Canoe Park includes a
launch facility and scenic boardwalk. In addition, the PLCA maintains
canoe/kayak storage racks for resident-owned paddle craft. These racks are
available on an annual basis for a fee. Please contact the Association's
Administration Office for more details.
Residents wishing to check out a canoe or kayak from the Canoe Park
must present their PLCA photo ID card (Guest Pass for residents' guests) at
the south gatehouse on Pelican's Nest Drive where the necessary paperwork,
safety equipment, and paddles are issued. When completed, residents need to
return the canoe / kayak to the proper rack, as well as return equipment,
paddles, etc. to the south gatehouse. Your cooperation is greatly
appreciated!
If you are new to paddling, or if you have experience but this is
your first time using this amenity or paddling on Spring Creek – please sign
up for a ‘First Time Paddlers’ outing. These sessions orient new
users to the procedures for using the amenity, provide safe paddling
instructions, and introduce participants to Spring Creek.
Click on the ‘Canoe/Kayak Activities Calendar’ link
on this page to see the dates for the next ‘First Time Paddlers’ outing.
Also, click on this link to see the
instructions for first time paddlers.
We also have ‘Group Paddles’ scheduled. These outings are intended to
allow residents to participate in a casual paddle on Spring Creek, and are
led by an experienced paddler. This is a good way to become familiar with
the several trails that are now marked on Spring Creek. Generally, these
paddles take 1 – 2 hours and depart from & return to the Canoe Park, using
the Pelican Landing paddle craft.
Click on the ‘Canoe/Kayak Activities Calendar’ link
on this page to see the dates for the next Group Paddle.
Additionally, we try to schedule one ‘off-campus’ outing per month.
These typically involve: meeting at the Community Center in the morning,
driving to the outing location (generally a 30-90 minute drive), using the
equipment and guide services of a canoe / kayak livery, spend 2 – 4 hours on
the water, (often includes enjoying a group lunch at a local restaurant),
and returning to Pelican Landing. These ‘off-campus’ outings generally cost
participants $20 - $50 depending on guide service, equipment used, and
length of outing. (Lunch is extra.) Again –
Click on the ‘Canoe/Kayak Activities Calendar’ link
to see when the next ‘off-campus’ outings are scheduled.
Also note that this home page has a link to
photos taken on previous off-campus
outings. This might help give you a feel for what the event looks like.
Finally, this page also has a link to a profile on the volunteer
committee supporting the Pelican Landing Amenity for Canoeing and
Kayaking (see below). Please feel free to see who we are and our areas of
attention. Also feel free to attend any of the committee meetings – again
these are listed on the calendar. If you are interested in volunteering to
be on the committee and helping promote safe paddling – we would love to
hear from you.

Off-Campus Outing
The Pelican Landing Canoe/Kayak Amenity is pleased to announce our
first "Off Campus" trip of the season to Clam Pass by Pelican Bay.
We will meet in the parking lot of the Community Center at 9:30 AM
on Dec 12 and car pool to the launch site.
Clam Pass is a beautiful sheltered route with very little large,
open water areas subject to winds so it is ideal for our first trip
of the season. Many of those who went last year rated it as their
favorite trip. Everyone is welcome as long as you have basic
kayaking experience and the physical ability to paddle 2 to 2.5
hours.
Other than the park entrance fee, there are no charges for those who
have their own boats. For those who wish to rent a kayak, the cost
is $30 per person. Single and tandem kayaks are available.
Regardless of whether you are bringing your own or are renting a
boat, you must register in advance. To register, contact Jim
Sernovitz no later than 5 PM Dec 9. Email contact is preferred:
jim@sernovitz.com or call at
498-2778.

The activities are
organized and managed by volunteers, with staff support. The
committee would like to offer more paddles in the 2008-2009 season
since many of the activities were full and due to limited
capacities, could not accommodate everyone that wanted to attend.
The committee would also like to add more canoe-only paddles to the
monthly schedule. To this end, the committee is looking for
volunteers to lead the paddles; anyone interested needs to be
qualified, but does not have to be a committee member. |
