She was very informative and it is our hope that in January she can assist us with this project.

Community Cocktail Party:
Barbara reported that we had another successful event in October. The cocktail parties are an ideal event that includes singles as well as new-comers.

There was a good turnout for the October Flu Shot Clinic. Three committee members volunteered to meet and direct people as they came in. The event was very well organized and ran smoothly. The next clinic is on November 11.

COMMUNITY CENTER ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE
Meeting: May 8, 1008 9AM

The purpose and role of the Committee, working as adjunct to the UOC, is to make Pelican Landing a better place.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Barbara Taefi, Elaine Bloom, Nancy Russell, Susan Schwinn, Toni Paolello, Virginia Pelczar, Marian Niehaus, Nancy Janek and Elaine Vreenegoor.

The meeting was called to order by new chair, Barbara Taefi, who introduced the committee members and asked member Virginia Pelczar to tell the group a little about herself.

Minutes from the meeting of April 9, 2008 were approved as mailed.

OLD BUSINESS

REPORT PADA: Barbara reported that she and Gail attended the meeting of the Professional Activity Directors Association where they got ideas for programs, found musicians and DJs, etc. They were especially impressed with an entertainer, Michael Brown and White Shoes, and a Polynesian review. They felt that the review, while expensive, would be perfect for an outdoor Luau. It was suggested since the group is new we should consider booking them this year since their rates will only go up. While the beach would be a good place, it is too difficult to carry over all the equipment that would be necessary.

While the group was talking about the beach, Barbara reported that she and Gail had attended a UOC meeting and had heard a report about the receding sand at out island beach. Since the beach is a private one, there would be no County money available for refurbishing it. They will continue to report to the group about what is happening.

Barbara announced she has reinstated Nancy Russell and Elaine Bloom as voting committee members with their terms starting 05/2006. In checking the minutes, Eleanor Burgmaster’s starting date was corrected to 05/2006. They will serve for a term of 4 years. The Committee voted to accept these appointments. Sue Schwinn, as the past chairperson, will also serve as a voting member for one year.

ACTIVITIES: May 14th Trivia. Barbara will assist Sue with score-keeping and refreshment restocking.

October 30 & November 6: Flu Shot Clinics will be held at the Community Center from 8-11 AM. Sue Schwinn, Lucy Killkelley, Nancy Russell and Virginia Pelczar will assist. We have been assured there will be plenty of vaccine so we will not be limited as to the number of people who can receive shots.

January 16, 2009: TGIF with a “Putting on the Ritz” theme will be chaired by Lucy Killkelley and Pat Briney. It is especially appropriate since it is the same week as the Naples Wine Festival. Dress will be optional, but it will be an opportunity for people can dress up if they choose.

February 7: Garage Sale. The committee discussed selling baked goods for charity, but the group decided people who come to the sale are not interesting in purchasing them. Gail will call the school to see if the students who were selling donuts and coffee last year are interested in coming back. It was also decided not to hold a craft sale this year and perhaps consider every other year.

February 20: New Orleans theme potluck dinner with Dixieland Music will be chaired by Toni Paolello and Marian Coulson. Dave Killkelley’s 8-piece band will entertain.

March 7: Beach Event. It was agreed that last years’ event was a huge success even though weather made it impossible to hold on the beach. Everyone agree it should be held again and hoped Nancy Russell and Kathy Spalti will chair it again. After much discussion, it was decided not to hold the beach event this year because with the charity auction, also in March, the schedule would be too full.

March 20: Charity Auction will be chaired by Kathy Spalti. It is planned that the Auction will take place every other year and could alternate with the Beach Party

March 26: Ladies Luncheon to be chaired by Marian Niehaus. The Book Club has local author Kristy Keirnen, whose books take place in Naples, coming to meet with their group. It was suggested the Book Club and CACC might work together and have her come to a Ladies Luncheon.

April 17: There will be a barbeque supper on the patio which will be chaired by Marian Niehaus. Music will be provided by a disk jockey and there will be line dancing lessons.

NEW BUSINESS: It was suggested that on the 4th Thursday of the month we hold Cocktails on the Patio, so residents could socialize. Each couple will bring their own bottle and an appetizer to share. Music will be piped onto the patio. A basket will be set out for participants to give a small donation for paper products. The first event will be held on May 29th.

A pancake breakfast will be held, probably Saturday February 14, as a charity fund raiser, perhaps for Susan G. Koman, Habitat for Humanity or Community Center beautification. All you can eat pancakes and sausage will be served and will be cooked on grills provided by the committee.

It was decided that Pelican Landing needs more PR in the local press. The committee asked Gail to find out if Jeremy, who is the PR staff person, could take on that responsibility. A decision was also made to have Gail make the decision about which up coming activity signs would be at the gates on which dates.

Future meeting times: Thursday mornings have proven not to be a good meeting time for some of the committee members. After a discussion, it was decided that the first Tuesday of the month, at 9AM looks convenient for the members present.

The next meeting of the Committee is scheduled on Tuesday, October 7 at 9AM.

The meting was adjourned at 10:30.
